My First Time at a Natural Hair Salon and My First Curly Cut by a Curl Specialist

I have gotten my hair cut significantly twice in my life. Once when I was headed to Ghana and Morocco in middle school (a bob similar to that of Victoria Beckham and Rihanna at the time) and again my sophomore year of high school ( a bob even across right at the nape of my neck). My hair was relaxed at the time, but this cut I got three weeks ago was different.

I got my hair cut by the curl. I’ve received a lot of compliments from people, but I have had a little aversion to my hair by people that aren’t that close to me. I love my cut and I’m going to list five reasons why I think you should get it or that it’s time for you to get a cut based on what I have been dealing with in another blog post and video. Make sure you are subscribed to my channel and newsletter so you don’t miss it.

I booked the Elite Curl Experience so in this appointment I was taught the best methods for clarifying, washing, conditioning, and detangling my hair. I was also taught the best application for applying my product or setting my hair for a wash and go. I was super happy to learn that despite not seeing a hair professional in almost two years, my hair was not in terrible shape. I think this is due to my having simplified my hair care routine for the past few years and just applying a single product and leaving my hair alone for the most part.

I decided to get my hair cut because I was so tired of my hair being lifeless. I would get a lot of compliments on my hair’s definition on how I did it, but I just could not shake the feeling of being unhappy with my hair. My explore page on Instagram is full of big, beautiful, hair shapes of girls with natural hair and curly hair and I was trying to figure out how to get that body as well. I knew a cut was in my future for a long time, but I wasn’t sure about the DevaCut or the RezoCut and other cuts you typically see on social media.

Evidence of the Mullet I Gleefully Let Go

I came across Nyquita of Brown Sugar Curl Salon on Twitter and her campaign is to get people to “let the mullets go”. Yikes! That was the perfect description of my hair especially in the wash and go format which has been my go-to. In twist-outs, braids-outs, or other stretched styles, it is not as detectable. But when you hear or see the “let the mullet go” battle cry and look in the mirror or picture your hair in your head, you know it’s time for a CHANGE. With my height, I can’t believe people just saw me walking around looking like that and had the nerve to hype me up!

Conveniently enough, Nyquita just so happened to be located in North Charleston so it was in perfect alignment for me to see her. I highly recommend going to Nyquita to get your hair done. Even if you have a solid routine, I recommend seeing her for the whole experience because you will probably learn something new unless you’ve done a virtual consultation or have seen a cut-it-kinky trained specialist previously. She takes her time which is super important in a stylist that aims to be educational and informative. She told me all the products she used and even set a PDF file of all the products used and instructions for cleansing and setting my hair. I even made sure to ask if she had affiliate links for the products because she did such an amazing job and she deserves to make a coin off her recommendations especially since they WORK. This wash and go lasted me longer than I expected and it will last about seven days.

Expect to do a client intake form when you book and to provide pictures of your hair when it’s wet and dry. You will also purchase a product for either a wash and go or a twist out depending on your preference and ONLY use that prior to your appointment which has to be done 5-7 days before. Of course, it starts off with the wash. That includes clarifying, shampooing, conditioning, and some other treatments that were specific to what my hair needed. One treatment was to remove the hard water residue from my hair. While still at the shampoo, she/we set my hair. This is something I’m pretty familiar with as I was applying my gels to my hair in the shower or directly after my shower to soaking wet hair.

After the hair was set or styled, I sat underneath the dry and while there I went ahead and purchased a tabletop hooded dryer for myself since Nyquita said the bonnet attachment style dryers don’t allow for your hair to dry properly in the sense that it kind of produces a helmet head effect. I saw under the dryer for an hour or more and at home when I dry my hair, I sit for at least 30 minutes. I usually catch up on YouTube videos, edit videos or blog posts, or upload my subtitles. It’s a nice way to just sit down and sometimes I even just read a book.

Post-Mullet and Gleeful

Next was the actual cut which I was so excited for! I wish I got the entire process on video, but it was hard to set up the camera so it wasn’t in anyone’s way, but I still think the essence of the cut was captured. I really like for people to work their magic in their area of expertise so I’m not super picky. I also fully understand that hair does grow back so I’m not pressed to have the bulk of my length removed especially because I didn’t like the appearance of it.

My desire is to have my hair be even and if I want to grow it out, I want my hair to shaped even and appear to grow all at the same length. Nyquita asked me to show her three pictures or curly cuts I like which were not the easiest to find to be honest. I shared a picture of one of the curly cuts she did and other curly cuts done by Protected by Lish. Nyquita kept making sure that I was okay with the hair being cut off and that was fine with me! I understand that some people are very attached to the length of their hair for various reasons. In my case, health and look is most important to me. If you are in Charleston, South Carolina or nearby areas or even in Columbia, South Carolina I would make the trek to Brown Sugar Curl Salon to see Nyquita. If this doesn’t convince you to cut your hair, I have a new video and post coming that will.
