His Only Wife Brief Book Review with No Spoilers

His Only Wife written by Peace Adzo Medie was my first book of the year and while it started a bit slow (what book doesn’t), the novel quickly sped up. It’s set in Ghana which is a country I love and can’t wait to return to with my family this time. I love stories about Black people throughout the diaspora and that has been somewhat of an unintentional theme among the books I have read so far this year. I am keeping a running list of books I’ve read with links to purchase.

I love art and that drew me into this book. I honestly have not been reading synopses and reviews as much. I have had fun just diving into an interesting title and book cover. Book illustrations have absolutely stepped their game up in recent years and I, for one, love to see it.

I enjoyed processing the development of Afi as she navigated womanhood, family obligations, and societal expectations. I think it’s a good book to read especially as a young woman because it helps you reflect on what you truly desire out of life and what you will or won’t do in order to get there. There is drama and a lot of decisions to be made in this story to be made with strings constantly being pulled in this young woman’s life.
