My Affordable and Minimal YouTube Set-Up | How I Film My Videos | Tech Talk

There are many things to consider when starting a YouTube channel. Probably the first thing you search for is what equipment to buy. I had been contemplating starting my channel for years when I finally put myself out there in September of last year.

These items were the key to starting my channel over a year ago and I still use them to this day despite getting “upgraded” products.

My Camera: Nikon D5300

CAMERA: I use the Nikon D5300. Canon is probably the most popular brand I see on YouTube, but I am more familiar with Nikon so I decided to stick with what I know.

It has a flip-out screen that rotates so I can see myself while I record and make sure my lens is in focus. The camera also has a 3.5mm stereo microphone jack that I use to attach an external microphone (just make sure the switch is turned on).

Honestly, you can use your phone and the editing software that comes with your computer or laptop. Canva also now has video editing so check that out too.

TRIPOD: You bought this big fancy camera, where are you going to put it on? A tripod. I have several tripods. I say to spend the extra money and get a nice and sturdy one. This will help if you go out to shoot photos in public where the wind can be a bit strong. I also recommend getting one that can also double as a tripod to hold your phone with a Bluetooth remote so you snap your own pictures.

MICROPHONE: Before you finish reading, you will see that Neewer is an amazing brand for getting your start in videography. I currently use the Neewer CM15 On-Camera Video Microphone for my audio.

Despite video being important when it comes to YouTube, audio is just as important. It is important that your words are clear and understandable. Trust me, it will help you immensely when you go to do your subtitles for your videos.

RING LIGHT: I use the Newwer D5300. I launched my YouTube channel just before fall, so I knew in order to be available to record in the fall and winter, I would need some artificial lighting. Of course, I like most other people prefer to film in natural light.

The height on the ring light is adjustable so I can film anywhere from my living room to my bathroom. I love this set because it comes with filters. The orange filter makes a lovely hue.
