What to Say in Your First YouTube Video

My first YouTube video is an introduction to my channel. You don’t have to do this, but I did this so it could also be used as my channel trailer. If you have people new to your channel or coming to see you on a different platform, this is great for them to see what you’re about.

The first time is very important. Introduce yourself. “Hi, I’m Teryn", is what I began with. I notice that a lot of YouTubers don’t introduce themselves and for me personally, it doesn’t help me to connect to them or their channel because I don’t know their name. I introduce myself in every video because I am still very new and I have new viewers every day. Even when my channel really starts to pop off, I will still introduce myself. It’s important to connect with your audience and if you don’t know, I’m from the deep south. That’s just how we do.

I use my name as my own brand and this helps to establish brand recognition. Before you start, think about what name you want to be recognized as. I will talk more about this in a future post.

In addition to letting them know what your name is or the name you would like to be called, let your audience know who you are, what you do, and/or what you’re about. In my intro video, I said what you would find on my channel, “fashion, beauty, lifestyle, and so much more.” If you are doing a specific topic or have a specialty, you could say something along the lines of, “Hello, I’m Dr. Hiddleston, but you can call be Dante. I am a zoo veterinarian. On this channel, you’ll find videos of behind-the-scenes animal surgeries, feedings, and cute cubs.” This will also help you when it comes to establishing your brand especially on YouTube which operates like a search engine.

Lastly, you want to give your audience next steps, “Please make sure to subscribe for more.” It can really be that simple. Chances are, your viewers will watch multiple videos before subscribing, but luckily you will appear on their recommended feed. They’ll see your editing skills get better, your confidence in front of the camera improve, and eventually, they will subscribe and engage on your channel.

Watch my video to see my introduction. Is it perfect? No. Have I improved since then? Absolutely. I still make videos about the same topics I mentioned and it is still up. I am all about being authentic which is why I kept the video.
